Death swallowed me whole while I was still alive
Now I'm tickling his tonsils till he vomits me up
Life plagued me with guilt when I thought I could thrive
I was whistling in the wind trying not to disrupt
The way I knew life should go.
The rules I tried hard to follow
Put my consciousness to rest
Now I think death likes to swallow the best
Why does it feel like
The more I love, the less I'm loved?
The less I'm loved, the more I want,
The more I love, the less I'm loved,
The less I'm loved, the more I want (to hate)
The way I thought life should be
Is not what I found easily
But death is so obvious,
We all know it comes for us.
We feed off each other but we're never full
Now I'm wrestling my conscience till he gives up the ghost
He's the source of guilt within my programmed soul
So regardless how I'm built he needs to find a new host.
Give me the X and Y so I can find the point
Of latching right and wrong onto a pivot joint.
When will the moral landscape let me kill for free
Or else punish the world for how it's killing me?
These two can't coexist, at least one must be;
If we don't criminalize, then we are not free.
I was taught my conscience is the highest law,
But if my heart loves killing, does that leave us at a draw?
The more I love, the less I'm loved?
The less I'm loved, the more I want,
The more I love, the less I'm loved,
The less I'm loved, the more I want to hate.
Who am I to decide what's good and what's evil,
But who are you to tell me that I'm wrong?
And who are those nine unelected officials
With no right to reinterpret the law?

Gloriously Mundane
03:49
|

There's work to do and money to earn and people to see
The balancing act is a 24-hour forgery
Seven days cannot contain just how weak I feel
Sundays fill, then Mondays kill and there's no time to heal
But I think a small perspective shift
Can ease our stay on the way to the grave
Maybe these heavy loads we lift
Bring peace to the day-by-day
It takes different kinds of glory
To tell the whole story,
The special and repetitive,
The debts we earn, rewards we give,
Don't die for your wages just to live
There's work to do and joy to be shared and people to see
The balancing act is a labor of love in delivery
Necessary evils can be necessary goods
When we steal back our privilege from the mandated "should"s
Don't you think this small perspective shift
Has made your load lighter to lift?
The road ahead might look the same
But we'll take it day by day
It takes different kinds of glory
To tell the whole story,
The special and repetitive,
The debts we earn, rewards we give,
Don't die for your wages just to live
It could all drive you insane
Till you see it's gloriously mundane

Deep Sighs and Few Words
03:56
|
|||
I'm too good at talking and I say so much more than I know
(My lawyer's gonna shut me up)
I'm done with my hearing and my thoughts will always steal the show
(This judge is gonna lock me up)
So I object, not to digress, but can't you see I'm smarter than you?
And the subject of our congress is we can't all a beautiful view.
There's more meaning in my sigh than in my sentence
There's less truth inside a plea than in repentance
I've convinced myself what I don't know, I don't need
The innocence I might have had is now an empty plea
What I don't know cannot hurt me till it's knowledge of a threat
If I shoot first, I will have proof that my death's a losing bet
In my hearing, I'm on trial to pay back the world my debt
I boasted in my successes; now it seems that I'm the threat
(My lawyer's gonna shut me up--this judge is gonna lock me up)
The smartest man in the world can't talk himself out of the life he's in
But I'll give it one more try 'cause I'm a better rhetorician than him
Deep sighs and a few words should do just fine
Or I could say a thousand words to paint a picture for the jury that I'm unworthy of doing time
'Cause there's a more beautiful view waiting for me
Worlds and worlds beyond what a hearing can see
The innocence I might have had is now an empty plea
There's more meaning in my sigh than in my sentence
There's less truth inside a plea than in repentance
There's more meaning in my sigh than in my sentence
There's less truth inside a plea than in repentance

See It In Your Eyes
03:30
|
|||
It's funny how a moment can freeze in time
When two strangers lock eyes
I recall a greenish hue, your focus stole my attentive view
Black and white engulfed the foreground
But the red stayed in your hair
I swallowed a gasp of air, and knew I wouldn't be forgetting you
Yeah, I could see it in your eyes
This thing in me I despise: falling in love at first sight
Always takes me by surprise, though I've done it a million times
So how can I be sure right now that you might be special somehow?
Yeah, I can see it in your eyes that you might be different somehow
Three weeks passed and I met you again
Through a friend of a friend
We were both excited, it was childishly hard to hide it
My skin's color sucked back into my bones
The first time we were alone
I swallowed a gasp of air but forgot to breathe as I lost every care
Yeah, I could see it in your eyes
This thing in me I despise: falling in love at first sight
Always takes me by surprise, though I've done it a million times
So how can I be sure right now that you might be special somehow?
Yeah, I can see it in your eyes that you might be different somehow
Oh, I fell into your eyes
But when I hit the bottom, I was caught inside your stare
You look different now, is someone else in there?
Oh, I fell into your arms
But when you held me tighter I looked up to find your glare
You are different now, is anybody there?
Oh I could see it in your eyes, you changed
A love for me, estranged and rearranged,
Am I a hypocrite? Did I change too?
It scares me to my core but I don't think it bothers you
I fell in love with your eyes
So don't look at me like that
You've become what I despise
My reflection looking back
